Upholstery and Furniture Cleaning Tips

Every mother will at some point have a problem with the furniture or upholstery.  I do all the time with my kids as they just love to make a mess.  I will go over some of the best tips that I know of for cleaning upholstery.

Always Check the Tags

This is such a simple thing that many people always forget.  You absolutely must check if your furniture needs a water based or solvent based cleaner.  If you get the wrong one it can be a disaster.  A quick rundown is that x means professional, w means water, s means water free, and we mean either water free or water based is ok.  If it happens to have the x tag then you will need to hire a professional upholstery cleaning company.

Don’t Forget to Vacuum First

Before you even think about spreading on a chemical cleaner it is imperative that you vacuum all the existing dirt off.  This is so important for the life of your furniture because if you don’t do this then the dirt will smear and rub into the furniture.

When in Doubt Test

If you are ever in doubt as to whether you should use a specific chemical or cleaner on your furniture then make sure to do a simple test first.  How you can do this is to just pick an area of the furniture that is a bit hidden and out of the way.  Then you just take the chemical and dab a bit of it on that piece of furniture.  If the result is good then you have no issues.  If the result is worse then the worst case scenario is that you ruin only a small part of the upholstery rather than the whole thing.

If you just follow these simple tips then I am confident that you will do a great job with your furniture.
